On May 4, 2026 Ashburnham City Councillor Gary Baldwin visited Peterborough City Hall to kick off his re-election campaign, officially registering as a candidate for the upcoming October 26th municipal election.
Baldwin singled out his constituency work on behalf of Ashburnham Ward residents as a key factor in deciding to seek re-election, adding he is looking forward to meeting with Ashburnham residents on the campaign trail.
In this most recent term, Baldwin continued to distinguish himself as a strong advocate for his constituents, a constructive, collegial voice at City Hall and a councillor who debates respectfully with an eye on the issues.
Baldwin has advocated for sensible and sustainable infrastructure improvements in Ashburnham Ward including improvements to the Armour Road and Douro Street intersection, enhancements to the Rotary Greenway Trail at Hunter Street, installation of a pedestrian crosswalk on Maria Street at Mark Street, and pursued requests from constituents to re-open the boat launch on Sherin Avenue. Baldwin spoke strongly against the rezoning of 90 Hunter Street East to allow a 17-storey apartment to be constructed on the site, and voted in opposition to the removal of lifeguards at Rogers Cove.
Baldwin has supported a variety of other initiatives including:
- Adoption of the City’s new Official Plan
- As Chair of the Waste Management Portfolio, he oversaw the implementation of the source separated organics waste programme (green bin) service to approximately 28,000 households
- Investments in affordable housing
- Continued investments in the city’s Flood Control Plan (Curtis Creek channel improvements
- Continued to advocate for repaving streets in Ashburnham Ward
- Continued to support investments in Parks and Recreation including completed upgrades to Denne Park, construction of the Miskin Law Community Complex and library branch
- Support for the multi-phased rejuvenation of ball diamonds and lighting at East City Bowl and Riverside Park including an improved irrigation system, installation of new bleachers, improvements to dugouts, and lighting.
- Supported the plan for 60 Transfer stop locations throughout the city
- Continued to support investments in the Wastewater Treatment Plant to meet provincially mandated standards
- Supported the resurfacing of 3.6 kilometres of downtown roads
- Supported the City’s physician recruitment programme
- Supported the Adoption of the Climate Change Action Plan 2.0
- Supported investments in the arts
- Supported the transition to the Next Generation 9-1-1 emergency communication system
This upcoming term will be a pivotal one for Ashburnham Ward and for the City of Peterborough, where residents will face several important issues. Among the most pressing are job creation and retention, implementation of the city’s official plan and the community planning permit system, and whether to move forward with a new Multi-Use Sport and Event Centre.
Baldwin says he is looking forward to ensuring Ashburnham Ward residents have a knowledgeable and experienced voice at the council table, and his focus will be on making sure Council strikes a balance between necessary infrastructure investments and fiscal discipline in the coming years.
